The Japanese jizakagai is a traditional adjustable hearth hook used to suspend pots and kettles over an irori (sunken fireplace). The fish acts as a lever to raise or lower the pot, and the fish symbolizes water to protect the home from fire. Today, Jizaikagi are used as decorative accents.
